19 Diabetes Diet and Weight Loss Tips

Try a few of these 19 diabetes diet tips to help you lose weight quickly and permanently.

  1. Water is the most important food for any diabetes diet.  Be sure to drink at least 6 glasses of water every day.

  2. Exercise five (ideally 7) days per week at least ˝ hour.

  3. In many studies, it has been shown that for weight loss and the diabetes diet, you should be sure to get lots of fiber every day from foods such as oatmeal and oat bran, raw and cooked vegetables, ground flax seed, apples.  High fiber foods help reduce your appetite while controlling blood sugar.

  4. Go on a diabetes diet that avoids the empty calories found in sugar and refined carbohydrates.

  5. Use a relaxation tape every day or meditate. Start with 10 minutes a day and build up to ˝ hour per day.

  6. When eating only eat – be conscious while sitting down at the table. Try not to eat in your car or any room other than where you usually eat (preferably dining room or at the kitchen table).

  7. Give up candy and other sweets permanently; choose low glycemic index fruit instead (like apples or berries).  You'll find with this diabetes diet that you don't crave food as much as you did before.

  8. A great help for weight loss and the diabetes diet is to join a diet and weight loss organization such as TOPS (a non-profit group that can be very helpful) or you can go to Overeaters Anonymous.

  9. This diabetes diet tip will remind you not to judge yourself in any negative way if you backslide. Notice if you have a critical voice in your head and ask it to support and nurture you instead of criticizing.

  10. Every day spend fifteen minutes or so appreciating each part of your body.

  11. Look at yourself in the mirror every day and tell yourself how wonderful and healthy you are.

  12. Don’t weigh yourself daily. Your weight on a diabetes weight loss diet will vary by up to 5 pounds every day, it’s best to weigh once a week. Weighing yourself can be an addiction and give you reason to criticize yourself for not reaching a goal weight.

  13. Write down how you’re feeling before you eat or call your diabetes diet buddy.

  14. Here’s a secret that will work for anyone. If you do it enough you can lose all the weight you want without a diabetes diet for weight loss. The secret is….walking. If you walk often enough, you will see the pounds melting off. In addition, brisk walking is excellent for controlling your blood sugar levels.

  15. Make a point of doing several special nurturing things for yourself every day that don’t involve diets such as buying yourself some flowers, taking a special scented hot bath, watching a favorite video.

  16. If you believe in God, say a prayer asking for healing and turn your diabetes diet and weight loss issues over to God (before grocery shopping and before each meal).

  17. Another weight loss and diabetes diet secret is to eat the diet foods that make you thin….any raw vegetables such as celery, cucumbers, bell peppers, lettuce - they use almost as many calories in digestion as they add to your body.

  18. Chew your food slowly and carefully, preferably with your eyes closed, tasting every bite.

  19. Put your fork down between bites.
