The Question:

I NEED HELP.  I AM 38 YEARS OLD, FEMALE, MOTHER OF TWO BOYS, WIFE TO A TERMINALLY ILL HUSBAND.  I JUST RECENTLY HAD SOME ROUTINE BLOOD WORK DONE AND I WAS ASKED IF I WAS A DIABETIC.  I HAD GESTATIONAL DIABETES WITH BOTH MY PREGNANCIES.  MY FIRST BABY WAS 10 POUNDS 2 OZ, AND 22 INCHES LONG.  WHAT I AM LOOKING FOR IS HELP.  I DO NOT HACE MEDICAL INSURANCE.  IS THERE A PROGRAM THAT HELPS PEOPLE WITH THIS CONDTION?  I DO NOT KNOW WHERE TO START. THANK YOU FOR READING MY EMAIL.

THE ANSWER:

Thanks for visiting our web site.  You may not be aware that a major cause of diabetes is the diet you eat.  If you change your diet, it will help stop the symptoms you are having at no additional cost and you might be able to avoid the need for medication.  Be sure to check with your doctor if you decide to try changing your diet.

The main problem in most people's diets are refined sugar and refined white flour products, white rice is also not healthy for diabetics.  Many foods you buy in the stores contain these unhealthy ingredients.  For some ideas on healthy diets to control your blood sugar, check out the following pages on our web site:

http://www.diabetes-guide.org/glycemic-list.htm

Also, check out the diet information on this page:
http://atkins.com/

It is very important to check your blood glucose levels regularly though, so we do recommend that you get a blood glucose meter.   I looked on the web for you to see if you could get a free glucose meter, but could not find one.  Try entering your local zip code at this web page to get local information for your area from the American Diabetes Association and possibly a free glucose meter:

You can often get a glucose meter at your local pharmacy very inexpensively or free, but be sure to check on the price of the test strips, they vary widely.
