QUESTION:

Hi , Could you tell me what the GI is of tupelo honey. I heard that it would not spike your blood sugar level, and also turbinado sugar or raw sugar. Hopefully you will respond to my e-mail, I'd appreciate it.  Thank You

ANSWER:

Unfortunately, all honey has a glycemic index of around 75 (plus or minus about 7 points).  This will definitely spike your blood sugar.  All types of sugar will also raise your blood sugar to an unhealthy degree.  See this link to our site for the glycemic index of many foods:

Have you heard of Agave nectar?  This is a sweetener made from the agave plant which tastes good and has a lower glycemic index than many other types of sugar because it is high in fructose. You can buy it at health food stores. You're probably familiar with xylitol, but if not, here's an article from our site about it and one about stevia, both natural alternative sweeteners:
http://www.diabetes-guide.org/Xylitol.htm
http://www.diabetes-guide.org/stevia.htm

Here is an article about other sugar substitutes you might have heard of:

For more information about diabetes in general, here is a link:

Hope this information helps.
