QUESTION:

I was going through the glycemic index on your website with my wife to modify
our diet with an eye toward reducing sugar intake.

(You can find this list here: http://www.diabetes-guide.org/glycemic-list.htm also check out another article here: http://www.diabetes-guide.org/glycemic-index.htm).

All went well until we got to the part on Grains.  I was floored to see that Whole Grain Bread, a constantly recommended item in a healthy diet rather than "white flour" products, was at 72.  White bread is only 69.

Am I misreading this chart?  What happened to the advice to eat Whole grain
products for a healthy diet?  Could there be an error in the chart?

ANSWER:

If you have diabetes, you might want to try what a friend of mine did recently.  She ate one food item at a time, then did a blood glucose test about 45 minutes later to see how high her blood sugar went.  Her experience showed that whole grain breakfast cereal raised her glucose level the most.  You may find out some interesting things about your own reaction to different foods.  I generally believe that grain products and potatoes may not be good food choices for diabetics.  Be sure to consult with your doctor if you decide to try this.  Best wishes to you.
